Ear Infection

Last Thursday, the daycare called to let me know Will was running a fever.  Clay and I both had work obligations that day so my mom went and picked him up and headed for the doctor's office.  His fever had spiked to over 103 when mom got him, so we wanted to get him checked out.  We were told he had an ear infection in his right ear.  I am glad it was just that and nothing more serious (my dad had swine flu, so we were grateful it was just an ear infection.)

This is Will's first ear infection, so we were given the standard amoxicillin for an antibotic.  He started taking that on Thursday night.  On Saturday morning, I went to change his diaper and found a BRIGHT red rash all over his stomach and back and it was creeping up his neck and onto his face (he also had some other symptoms/issues, but I won't put that on the blog). I had a panic attack.  I just knew he was having an allergic reaction to the medicine.  I called my mom quickly and told her what it looked like and she said she was pretty sure he was allergic. She said that is how they found out I was allergic to Penicillin medications.

I stopped giving him the medicine, and we went back to the doctor Monday afternoon and confirmed that he is allergic to Penicillin.  He got an alternative antibotic to take for the ear infection.  He was pitiful on Saturday, but has been back to his normal self yesterday and today.

I am glad we found out now, and that he is okay.

  1. I am allergic to penicillin too, I think its more common than people realize...it just makes antibiotics more expensive :/ Glad he's better :)

  2. Wyatt is allergic to amoxocillion as well- his stomach is too sensitive to it, and he throws it up all over the place the minute the swallows it. We found out the hard way too- no fun! I hope Will is feeling better!
