Welcoming Home a Hero

Today, Will and I had the opportunity to participate in something really special.

We were able to welcome home our friend, David, from a year-long service in Afghanistan.  It was so cool seeing people from our community gather together to honor someone who has sacrificed so much so that we could continue to live our lives in peace.  He got a police escort through our town and was interviewed by the local media.

David is a wonderful man. I have known him since I was in the 4th or 5th grade. His son, Dave, and I grew up together and his wife, Mary Kay, is one of my mom's dearest friends. Mary Kay also babysits Will for us and is a special part of Will's life.

I know Will is too young to understand all of what happened today, but I am glad he got to participate.  My hope is that as he gets older he will be able to comprehend that there are wonderful men and women all over this world who are serving our country.

I have known others that have traveled overseas to be a part of the war effort and I am so grateful to them, but I realized today what a sacrifice it really is.  I think Will has changed the way I think about so many things.  Now I think about the sacrifice these men and women are making to not only to keep me safe but they are keeping Will safe.  I will never be able to thank them enough for protecting my child and his freedom.

I am so proud of David and the man he is.  I love his family and I know that they are glad he is home.  It was also Mary Kay's birthday today and I know that the gift of having David home safe was the greatest gift of all.

Thank you David for your service!
